Computer Setup

Just out of curiosity, what is the appeal of a standing desk?
Posture, it improves your working posture and allows more flexibility in regards to changing position. It'll supposedly help my back later in life by keeping my spine naturally aligned without needing a fancy chair. It has also helped me fight the afternoon drowsiness I usually get around 3pm.
Are you supposed to watch porn and fapp while standing?!
Lets not lose our minds just yet... there is still the wifi with tablets and ultrabooks. Oh and sex, can't forget sex.
I'm married, I can forget sex. Plus, watching porn on tablets suck now that Flash isn't supported. I have to make do with Hex and SysConfig.
I'm so sorry about the marriage thing.
Or find sites that support HTML5.
Porn sites work just fine on my iPad.
This is my normal ritual, more leverage.
Ahh that makes sense. Thanks!
What are toe shoes in this context? Do you wear bunny heels to the office?
Vibram five fingers. haha, bunny heels are a little too cross dressy for me.
You sound like my boss. He is also an advocate of standing desks.
I wish I were someone's boss. I guess I technically am because support forwards bugs to me but I wouldn't necessarily call them my underlings.
Agreed. Working in customer support, having a desk I can raise and lower at will is godsend. I get much more energetic if I stand for most of the day, and Im usually tired enough that I get a good nights sleep.
If you get sick of a standing desk I recommend a saddle stool, because it allows your hips to take up a position closer to standing it's a nice middle ground.
Lots of studies have shown that people that sit all day at work live shorter lives because it negatively affects your circulation amongst other things. Just getting up every hour or so decreases the risk a lot, but a standing desk helps posture, blood flow, and increases calorie burn if only a little.
Makes sense, but I don't think I could ever part with my chair. Standing up while gaming isn't really my thing.
I can't imagine that would be a difficult concept to make on your own, for lots less than a thousand dollars. I may have to look into it....
All of the stations at my workplace (large production facility) had those desks so we could lower the desk for tests and lots of paperwork. We would raise it back up for on-the-fly spreadsheet tracking while running the machines! So helpful, but I had no idea they were so expensive.
I actually find I have faster reflexes in game standing up.
Are you using a controller? If I stood up while using a keyboard and mouse, I think my wrists would die.
Nope, keyboard and mouse. I've been told I have weird keyboard use, everything is flat on the desk and sometimes I hang my wrists off the front of the desk so everything is just sort of hovers.
There are also studies that say standing desks aren't good either...
This is true. I would say it is all about finding balance and that it is different for each person.
I guess we need those 90's desk chairs where your legs are at 45 degrees.
Can you link an article please? I'm really curious about this stuff.
My solution is to get more snacks and drinks every 30 minutes. This is the key to a healthy lifestyle.
This is pretty interesting to see a bunch of stuff from Ikea combo together very well. Gives me some ideas.
I knew it! I was going to ask you if you were inspired by that site.
Yes I was. I wanted a cheap solution but something unique. It only got the creative juices flowing.
Linus looks like Likus Tech Tips' Linus in his cat animorph.
Saw the park tool truing stand. Have an bookmark for building wheels.
Thanks! I used more tools from my bike tool kit than I thought I would while building the desk.
Something I've done once and have no ambition to do again.
Legs? where we're going we don't need legs!
Where'd you get those monitor stands?
Left over from Dell from the 90's. I believe it was called a "monitor raiser" from a time before flat panels and monitor mounts were a thing.
IKEA EXPEDIT? There are some nice boxes as well that fit perfectly into the shelf. I believe they're called DRONA.
Yes, the boxes are next step after a drafting chair. The desk ran over budget because I didn't think about my moment on the top tier and I put off the box units until next Ikea trip.
Cool, how is standing for ya? And how its for dog?
Standing is great, I have more energy come 3pm than I do sitting but I get more ADD on account of the 'swaying'. You tend to move positions more when standing.
Oh man, those malm bookcases are so fucking VERSATILE, I have three in my house and two are being used as my TV unit.... At 89 dorra each how can you go wrong...
Neat idea. Did you think about drilling through one or more of those support plates and the top shelf in order to thread cables through all nice and sneakily?
How tall is this? I pretty much have a majority of the stuff you used and this got me interested. Since I do a lot of manual work on my desk. I like to work standing up but my desk is low and sometimes laziness takes over and gets me to sit. I'm already suffering from lower back problems (@ 23yrs old) because of my sitting lifestyle. Would it be a perfect height for me? I'm a bit on the short side 5'6"-5'7".
Cool, cool. A bit off subject, but how about more pics of your bike work zone.
Your kitty sure is cute. Nice setup.
Is that height comfortable for using keyboard? I've been experimenting with elevating my keyboard/mouse using a board and some books on each end to determine a good height... but even with a 16 inch rise, my hands hurt from typing after even minimal use.
What timing, I have an Expidit shelf that I wanted to use as a desk, too.
A+ for creativity, but man, my neck hurts just looking at this!
You, my friend..Are a genius. Love the two tier!
Looks like some other ikea hacks I've seen. Is that where you got the idea?
Cool seeing other custom ikea expedits, I found a used custom ikea expedit on craigslist a few weeks ago for $90 but I use it to store my records and turntables.
Upvote because of the name of your dog. And the gaming setup of course.
It seems like it might be easy to tip over. Is it secured to the wall somehow to prevent it from falling over on you?
No more pictures of a dog? also seems tad bit high, how do you like it so far and what are the specs?
Added animals to the album.
Got any idea for where to buy that metal tubing stuff(1' 1/8 inch i think) that is used for monitor mounts? i need that shit..(moving and i cant drill into the walls -__- ) nice station btw and also.: those harmon kardon speakers.
I'd call up your local hardware or plumbing store. Have you considered a clamp on mount?
I dont have a desk though :/
Where do you put your legs?
Under his torso because it's a standing desk.
Oops. Fail read. Still best of luck to OP. I had a security job standing all day. It's torture :P
I've stood up at a couple of jobs now and found it is all about shoes and breaks. Good shoes and more short breaks but it is different experience for everyone.
There is about 14" of overhang in the front so when I get a drafting stool, that's where they will go but I don't intend on sitting much.
Dude you must be short af
