I like the mount... first time in a long time I was "wow-ed"

I usually don't like open builds like this, but damn did he make this attractive. Definitely got a double take from me.

What kind of man has 4 120GB SDD drives and says to himself "Not enough. I should get 4 1TB HDD drives just to be safe?"

One of the HDD drives is 2TB and another is 1.5TB

4 120GB Drives is just 480GB space total. That's nowhere near enough for storage. The SSD's are for installations and OS. The HDD's are just file storage.

Oh good, I'm not the only one. The only thing i can think of is identical spacing on the bus lengths. You'd think with the throughput required for graphics processing, something this long would have an impact on timings.

No, there was an article from a tech news site about these wall mounted beauts, and it turns out that it has literally no noticeable effect on timing, even in comp gaming. OP and other people with wall mounts seem to be doing just fine, too. Just get the right extenders for whatever PCI-E slot you have, and it seems to work fine from what people have posted across the internet.

Timing is really only critical within the GPU; that's part of why the actual processor in there is tiny.

They did cause problems. Did you not read the build log? He had to buy different ones with good shielding at $90 a pop.

It did cause him problems. He ended up having to spring for some expensive shielded ones to avoid EMI.

For the lazy: There are extension cables that allow you to place the GPU wherever you want, but still plug it into the mobo.

One teensy tiny suggestion, some small fans along the edges to break up any dust gathering on your parts.

Those are cool. A lot more expensive than I thought they'd be, though.

You can likely go for cheaper ones if you are inside a case and not using two of them next to each other.

I wish! It just looks like 1 extender. There are 2 more extenders in the 3rd & 4th slot.

Right, 4 Solid State 120GB drives AND 4 1 TB drives. That alone is double the cost of my rig. Not to mention the water coolers, CPU and GPUs...

Much cheaper too buy an electric compressed air can. They are about $59 and you'll never have to buy compressed air again

I got that one when we moved offices at work and it came and still comes in very handy. Every few months I'll use it on our dot matrix printer to get all the crap out from the perforated paper and the cheap ribbons.

With all water cooled i cant see dust being that big of a deal. you arent putting direct airflow over the components, just the radiator fans (assuming he has them). it may collect me just sitting there openly, but i would be willing to bet its still overall much better than a in-box, non water cooled pc.

My paintings on my wall are not water cooled and I have to dust them once a month.

I've got my Degas prints OC'd to 4.6 GHz.

My Dali can pull 3.9 but sometimes the clockspeed just randomly melts.

Im sure if you dusted the inside of a computer case once a month it would be a lot worse. by no means am i saying that it would NEVER have to be done, i just dont think it would be a "nightmare" as the first person said, or would have to dust it every day like someone else suggested.

That is true. i didnt really mean that you should never dust it, i just cant see it being a nightmare to keep clean, like the other person who replied to me, he dusts his paintings once a month. i have friends who blow out the inside of their case almost as often so it doesnt really seem like a huge hassle.

I have an open air case and bought one of these. Has higher air pressure than canned air and only need to use it once a month (barely any dust).

I put the hose from my shopvac on the "blower" side. It works!

I don't know, how often do you dust your rig? He could just stand up, grab some canned air, and spray it every day, no hassle at all.

Especially with a longhaired cat. :/

All the components I took from my old rig, so I didn't spend any money on hardware upgrades. My old rig (built Dec 2011) costed around $3000 at the time.

It's absolutely stunning, but I'm curious about the rad setup. You can just barely see it in the corner of one of the pictures. What have you got running in that part of your wonderland?

I spent in that range and mine doesn't look nearly as good. Time to save up to do this in a few years when my compentents are at their end of life.

That motherboard has 8x SATA ports.

There are 8 SATA ports, they're stacked in groups of two so it looks like 4 from that angle.

Very cool build but what do you do about the whole not having a Faraday cage around the motherboard problem?

Haven't experienced any issues with that so far. Only problem I had with EMI was with unshielded PCIe risers, and that was fixed by getting really expensive shielded ones.

Absolutely, any discharge zap from that and BOOM game over.

The expensive risers are to prevent EMI, not static buildup.

I was wondering about the shiny PCIe cable there, I've only ever seen daughter board style risers. Hopefully you don't run into any EMI issues it would be a shame to have to wrap the board in that platic material because it looks great. ESD is the one that scares me thou.

If you read the link, those are very expensive shielded risers. $100 a pop.

Why do you think a Faraday cage is important?

Computers put out a lot of electrical noise otherwise. Might mess with radios/cellphones/wireless phones etc.

So laptops in plastic cases...? Mostly plastic video game consoles...? Circuit boards in TVs/monitors...?

You'll find most of those plastic cases aren't the cage, it's actually hidden inside either as a piece of leafed metal mounted to the plastic or between the plastic and the motherboard itself. Some systems skip this but it's unlikely in well build systems. It's one of the things that make those machined aluminum cases you see these days so great, built in cage no extra bulk.

Hmm yeah some things are better protected than I expected or remembered from prior teardowns. I just tore down a 2005-vintage Thinkpad (tough black one) and while the bottom of the machine did have a full metal seal and the bottom of the keyboard was a metal plate, the palm rests were just plastic. And the motherboard did extend to under the palm rests.

Laptop cases are lined with metal and they have little tabs that when fully assembled keep the whole case in electrical contact so no one part can build up more static than another and discharge internally.

On a scale from one to loud how loud is that thing?

Its actually very quite. The entire board only has 2 fans. My radiator fans are on a fan controller set at low. I can hear my hard drives over the fans..

I would've put the hard drives in a NAS tucked away somewhere. You have plenty of SSD based local storage, I presume it's mainly video and other media files on the hard drives?

Honestly, if it was purple lit, and purple colored, I would be masturbating to this. This is one of the most impressive rigs I have ever seen. I have only seen one even slightly similar, it was amazing but nothing like this. Truly badass.

That is just so sick with it. I will def be taking a few design ideas from this build of yours for my next build. If you don't mind. Amazing piece of pc art.

Yesss, aside from more awesome, they act as reservoirs and has holes on top to fill the system with water.

Got to have some priority in life. I know peoples who build a dry NAS just so their pron collection would be away from the water cooled rig!

I expected another wall mounted disaster. I must say that I am impressed. It's clean, it works, and I love it. My only improvement would be to use acrylic tubing to make it look that much more "clean" but above all else I am impressed!

Cool I have the same motherboard, ram, and power supply =P well almost the same I have just AX1200.

How exactly does the water cooling work? was looking into building a desktop mostly for gaming and just curious to what advantages and such it offers.

There is a mini copper plate sitting on top of the component being cooled. Water flows over it and carries the heat away to a radiator similar to the one in a car. Water cooling is much more efficient than air, so components are cooler, also its much quieter than air cooling.

Just saw this on the PCCG page. Looks pretty cool but I'd never build something similar, not really my thing.

Why do you need 4 ssd

2 in RAID for OS and random stuff I want to run fast. The other 2 in RAID for my games and more random stuff.

Have you considered putting them into a RAID 10 configuration (1+0, mirrored then striped)? You'd have the same amount of available disk space and possibly noticeably better performance.

Err, raid 10 would give 50% usable space, assuming he has them in raid 0, he can use all available space

A 4-disk RAID 10 volume will provide the same amount of space as two separate RAID 1 volumes, which he's currently doing.

Despite being mistaken, your comment deserves an bookmark for excellent diagrams

If you run them in RAID 0, you get about 4x the sustained read & write throughput with minimal overhead. So if you have the SATA ports and physical space for the four drives, you can get much more performance and storage space that way. The other downside is that if one of them fails, you get data loss immediately.

Now that is a proper gaming setup! Kudos to all the hard work - certainly paid off. Paintings don't belong on the walls, this does! Truly a work of art.
