Is there a reason for that configuration of red keys on your keyboard?
Ha! You play at work?
:-) there are a few employees here that play
I like that we have the same mouse. How do you like it?
The Logitech? It's ok. I like the nascita (also on my desk) but I haven't gotten it to work with Ubuntu :-(
Are you dual booting windows or using wine?
Wine. It's not bug free. But, due to my carpel tunnel / repeated stress, I don't play at a high level anymore, no it's not that important.
Details:
12GB RAM
i5-3570K @ 3.4GHz
NVidia GTX 650
64GB SSD - Ubuntu 13.10 + Gnome 3
27" Monitor @ 2560x1440
23" Monitor @ 1920x1080
What do you do for work that requires all the flash drives?
Those aren't flash drives :-P
They are little Sha-256 / Cryptocurrency miners.
Just a little hobby. Unrelated to work. :-)
Have they actually turned a profit?
Not yet. Unfortunately, it's no longer possible to just let them sit there and mine and hope to make money. You need to do "Day Trading" (like in the stock market) but with crypto-currencies.
Arbitrage ftw. Let your application do all the work for you.
Sounds complicated. I never got into mining but I definitely researched it and from the looks of it you need dedicated hardware to make any kind of a dent after joining a mining pool.
Do you think that it would be possible to use those miners in some kind of distributed computing capacity? I've seen miners before and thought that you could so a lot of good if you just started running folding @home or other distributed computing projects on them.
You can only use thew for sha-256 hashes. So my primary use after they are too old to mine is password cracking. (Assuming the passwords I'm testing against are sha-256)
Are those ASIC miners? I haven't been in the BTC loop in a long time.
Yup, and yup. Bitcoin's exponential increase in mining difficulty makes it not very profitable, so I mine other things.
What altcoin are you mining? I have not seen an SHA256 altcoin that is more profitable than BTC.
Depends on which has the lowest difficultly
Well I'm intrigued. Mind a little more detail?
Ah I see. I've heard of Bitcoins but never really researched them that much. Cool nonetheless.
Yeah, I got a good deal on these, but they are normally waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to overpriced. They average > $20 each. (I got mine for $8)
How'd you get them so cheap? I paid £18.99(≈30 USD) each for mine.
Coinwarz tells me that i could make $1 in revenue per day when mining Butterflycoins, however if i change the power required from 2.5W to 50W the revenue falls to 80cents. how is that possible?
Do those even make a decent profit? Difficulty is very high right now.
For /bit/ coins. Gotta mine other things unless you can buy mining power for more than 1GH/s/$20
I, too keep a spiderman mask located conveniently at my desk. Mine has black around the eyes, though. (spectacular)
It makes me so happy when I ride my bdxe to work wearing it. :-)
Sweet case! Is that the Prodigy M I see?
Awesome work station! Do you find that the mechanical keyboard bothers anyone around you when typing?
Yeah, the guy across from me says it's kinda loud, but there is a lot of ambient noise in the office (heater, vents, etc). I don't think anyone has a real problem. They just put in headphones. But MXBlues are the most comfortable I've used.
I have an MX Blue at home and it bothers the GF in another room down the hall when I use it.
I see you are running GNOME3 desktop environment.
What tower is that? Is it a mini?
How was that case to work with? Easy cable management?
Well, it's really small. The computer I built before this was a full tower. So, it was hard to hook up some things.
Would you recommend that case for building a home media server? I definitely like the look of it.
Yes. It's a good size. :-) it can fitmtwo video cards, so you can game on it too
Where/what do you work? I see some codding/programming if I'm correct :D
I actually didn't spot it thanks
Definitely showing this to my coworkers :-)
Best you can get for 250$. They make beats by dre look like 10$ earbuds
Not necessarily true, it depends what you're looking for in a pair of headphones. However, they are quite decent.
Low build quality, great sound.
Your employer is ok with you mining bitcoins on their dime?
It sort of looks like his employer doesn't care WHAT he does beyond his actual work.
Bingo, my work is really chill, and focused on community. As long as we get work done, that's what matters. (We have to earn our salary, etc)
Could you link where you bought those read and blue miner-thingys and what they are attached to?
I'm super impressed with your ability to get friends to use Hangouts. Awesome build too!
Why is your keyboard in the stand?
Sometimes I stand and work :-)
Is that an actual keyboard stand, or is it a foot-stool that you've purposed as a keyboard stand?
It's actually a cheap laptop lap desk.
Standing desks are pretty cool but do yourself a favor and get an anti-fatigue mat to stand on.
I had one at the old office.. I wonder what happened to it during the move..
We also use Google Apps at where I'm currently working. My co-worker and I always have to upgrade to "hangouts chat" when our higher up invites us to a group chat. We always revert back to the old Google chat format though. I do so out of self constraint (I'd abuse the emoticons), and she does it because she thinks the emoticons are creepy.
I don't mind if the world knows where I work. My boss found my username during my initial interview lol.
Just did a Google search on my name did Nome cross references. I do the same on myself occasionally. Its good to know what people can find about you.
I love when people are like this. I see you have some form of "Career" thing on your website. I'll wait till tomorrow when I'm not partially mm, drinking some Guinness to send an e-mail & read more about your company.
I'm just here to say that I have the same giant acrylic cups that you have. Cupbros.
They are quality! Except for the printed logo. That comes off in the wash. But overall!, pretty good.
That's a lot of hangouts.
Open earphones AND mechanical keyboard for open office work? Your coworkers must hate you.
Neither has to be loud in general, unless you listen to music at really high volume... and clicky switches are obviously clicky, but I've yet to hear a complaint about the keyboard with Cherry MX Red/Clear switches that I bring to classes.
You need a headphone amp/dac for those lovely sennheisers
