Computer Setup

What do you do with a machine like that
I used to have six monitors, but it wasn't because they were useful or even practical. It was just because "Oh lookit! An extra graphics card! Oh lookit again! A free monitor!" Ergo, monitor overkill.
Represent. 1 became 3 became 5 became ZOMG RECREATE THE STOCK EXCHANGE TRADING FLOOR! It's an addiction, can confirm.
I have 7 and I actually use them all. I think I'm at the max I really need though. There really hasn't been a time where I felt like I could use another one.
What do you use them for? : O
You know when you climax and sometimes the video moves past the good part? This essentially minimizes that chance to ~0%.
1 main monitor, games, web browser, whatever my primary task is
Sadly, I've noticed myself do this. I have a three monitor setup and had three instances of coolcomputersetups on them. It wasn't even separate coolcomputersetupss, it was all the front page.
"Welp. I've scrolled through the first ten pages on the front page. I wonder what's on the front page..."
"Well, that's enough coolcomputersetups, time to go back to work."
I believe Ctrl-W will save you from reaching up to F4.
It's funny that people are "correcting" you about how to better reopen a closed tab.
I notice myself doing it too. ill be on coolcomputersetups and im like "im bored of coolcomputersetups" then open another tab and unconsciously go to coolcomputersetups.
Oh nothing interesting on coolcomputersetups...maybe this other coolcomputersetups will have something new.
My best guess is that he plays EVE. Extra screens...for spreadsheets!
The first thing I thought when I saw this. "Shit, I could do a lot of EVE on that."
This was my first thought. Many people have multiple accounts that they use at the same time.
I no longer have that, though I used to at my old job. Could do it again gladly. One for.... word, bluebeam, excel, autocad, revit, chrome (product searches), spare.
I see you use 1 screen for Yahoo Messenger and the rest for cool backgrounds
I thought that's what extra monitors were for.. How else am I supposed to look at badass concept art?
People still use yahoo messenger?
Strangely enough, yes. I still know a couple of people that actually use YIM as their main messenger.
At the risk of sounding ignorant, but what replaced YIM? What's hip with you kids these days?
Most people I know use Skype now. Switched to it from YIM and AIM about 6 years ago. It's pretty nice.
Facebook chat has taken over 95% of all non-phone based text communication.
I use Google's chat with both coworkers and friends. Hangouts was a huge step backwards though.
Steam chat, just because it's so convenient, and if I'm going to be interacting with somebody online, I'll probably want to play a game with them.
I use Steam or Google Hangouts. I stopped using skype when they put in those hideous banner ads
I use it daily. Sounds lame, but the emoticons are cuter than any other IM.
Not enough monitors IMO. -1
Might as well open every laptop I have and put it around my desk
WHen presenting a computer setup a lot of people display everything.
"A peacock does not display only 4 feathers"
...at least there isn't an iPad and iPhone as well? (I've never understood this when presenting your computer setup.)
Sometimes the fight has to get taken out to the streets.
Things like jungle timers and such. I have an app on my phone that alerts me when my eve stats are finished leveling. So it seems relevant enough for me. To each his own though.
Well, where else are you supposed to have them?
You should have used a matrix wallpaper, would be more fitting
I don't even see the code anymore, all I see is screen, screen, and screen.
You could watch 6 pornos at once!
Or an orgy from different POVs!
Why does this not exist?
Well, there are multi-POV releases out there... just start playing them at the same time from different directions.
Technology has come a long way.
Your electric company must love you.
Monitors actually don't use much power compared to, for example, graphics cards.
I don't mean this is a judgmental way at all, but I have to ask how you find that practical?
I have 4 and don't get lost cause I always put the same rss feeds, email clients, system metrics, stock tickers etc in the same place every time I boot up.
Yeah, but that's different. I'm going to make an assumption and say you have yours in panels. you can easily flash up to the top right, top left, bottom right/left. But his are set up in what seems like such a distracting way that it's no longer like one screen divided into 4, now it is 6 completely different screens, that is much more chaotic in my opinion
The 6 middle/main screens are in a nice symmetric layout, I think you'd get used to that pretty quickly. Two are laptops that probably aren't usually there.
That's why I love the multiple desktops in Linux, I can have different things going on in each one and just switch through them so smoothly. I miss it when I'm at work.
As someone who works in IT, I can easily see 4-6 monitors being practical/useful.
I don't understand the purpose of monitor setups past 3.
I have a fourth TV that mirrors my main monitor. I use it to watch TV shows or use it to play video games when I use my xbox controller.
How would you even pay attention to the show though? The whole "have a movie on one monitor, work on the other" sounded like a really good idea to me, until I got two monitors and realized I'd either completely miss the plot of the movie or get little to no work done. I can't imagine multitasking between three monitors with an additional movie running.
I can do it with shows I've seen before, for example at the moment I just put on the office on netflix on my other monitor while doing productive coolcomputersetups browsing on this one.
I do the same thing. The Office is just super relaxful!
The key is to watch stuff you are only mildy interested in. For example, I'll watch movies I've seen many times already like Ghibili stuff. TV shows work well for this, personally anime is great for me because I find much of it kind of interesting. Watching TwitchTv works for me too.
Sitcoms also work, background noise more than anything else.
Mhmmm, they aren't my thing but my stepmom loves watching them while she works. It's about finding that thing you are barely interested in.
Getting any work done is obviously not going to happen, but watching a slow-going moving while surfing coolcomputersetups? That's possible.
Where abouts do you put it?
It's basically on a TV stand next to my computer. I don't really use it while on my computer, it's specifically used for TV shows when that is all I want to do.
4 is doable: 1 for email 1 for stock ticker 1 for your trading platform 1 for your analysis spreadsheet
You need a fifth dig monitor for Coolcomputersetups though.
+1 for porn and you're done
Damn it forgot that one.
I do bioinformatics with 3 monitors, I usually have one with my Ubuntu VM with multiple terminal windows for running commands/programs, one with an editor for writing code/scripts (often alongside a web browser because I'm Googling how to do something), and one with a genome browser.
I can understand 4 or even 5 perhaps
They're really good for a bit of occasional gloating. Also, when friends come over, they're great bragging material.
Three in eyefinity for gaming. One for auxiliary things like a movie.
At work on my desk I've got 2 24" 1440 monitors for my main windows workstation(bottom left and right), one 24" 1440 or my linux box(top left), one 24 " 1440 for OSX for testing purposes (could easily be VM'd but is on the top right) all connected via Synergy so they're all using one mouse and keyboard, then over to the left side, there is one 39" 4k monitor for Nagios and LANsweeper system monitoring that monitors pretty much everything on my network for things like disk space, network traffic, SMART errors, uptime, service utilization, processor utilization, etc. for every workstation and server on the network, one 24" 1440 monitor for KVM to the local servers mounted just below it, three 24 inchers on top of each other to the left for Cisco ADSM to monitor our 3 offices router/firewalls for things like traffic, IDS alerts, and blocked packets. They're mounted around the office so its not all in my face all the time, but there are definitely cases for LOTS of monitors, if you're monitoring a lot of stuff. For home, I just have a big 39" 4k monitor (TONS of pixel density, if you don't need to seperate things, its like having 4 24" monitors mounted together, but with no annoying bezel) on the desk for my linux box, a small 24 inch 1440 off to the side for windows which is also hooked to a 1080p 50" TV mounted above it for videos and games. The living room, wifes PC, kids PCs, etc. all have just one monitor each, all of them 24" 1440. Including laptops and tablets, I've got close to 20 screens in my house alone, and another 10 at work. Having at a glance monitoring of your systems is a good thing for spotting trends. Of course I could get rid of all of them and just use the email and text alerts I have set up for everything, but not only does it let me spot trends that may not be set up as rules/alerts, but it also looks cool, we've gotten a few customers to come on board after seeing our server room and thinking we were really advanced tech wise.
Very cool setups. Are you using the Seiko 4k screen as a monitor at home? How do you like that? I currently have three 23" 1080p screens at home, one each dedicated to work and personal, and one that switches depending if I'm working or not. I'm considering upgrading to 2x 27"1440p screens or a 39" 4k screen.
Sorry to hear about your limited imagination.
I've got three and I run out of things to do with the third sometimes.
I only want 3, plus 1 big one
Thanks for the comments, all.
All that and just a Hyper 212? Really?
The 6 center monitors are what he's talking about.
A wild TNG reference appears!
I've never seen a need for more than two monitors personally, but that is one hell of a gaming setup. I could see myself going insane trying to use all of those screens at once. After like 4 I would t know what to put on.
Just imagine trying to find your mouse...
6 would be too much for me, I'll stick to my 2
The power bill must be tearing a new hole in your wallet...
Lot of people asking why and what you do on them, but nobody is asking the important question of WHAT do you do for a living/job and how do I get something like this set up for myself.
The nyancat potential is unreal.
The six monitors are awesome. I am actually most interested in the New Order poster in the back. Cheers.
Why do you have so many computers? a pc, a mac, and 2 laptops?
What the fucking shit... THAT'S AWESOME!
I love the New Order poster!
I would suggest a wall mount.
I'm sorry but if you have so many monitors that they overlap, you have too many monitors.
Does anything even matter anymore.
So, what is the point of having so many monitors?
You should work for CSI. They could use your technical expertise in flashy ridiculousness.
Sooooooo.... you got one for me???
What are the specs of the machine that runs all of these? o_O
Wayyy too much in my opinion. What's the point other than credit?
Look how much better that Cinema Display looks than the others.
