Ikea Gerton Stained Desk - Computer Setup

Are you a woodworking anthropologist investigator sleuth who likes Macs and drinks ... Bailey's?
This is about as good of a guess (attempt) as I will probably ever read about my life. In fact I have very, very little woodworking background. I found the deer pelvis in the woods years ago (but just learned literally YESTERDAY that this was in fact a deer pelvis and not a skull, like I'd been telling everyone). Magnifying glass was an item I was able to get from my grandfathers house before it was sold. And that is an iced coffee.
The 13th shot reminds me of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, with the muted orange tones.
How'd you get two monitors on one macbook?
User Kingham is correct. HDMI adapters in the thunderbolt ports. I thought the vertical monitor position would come in handy much more than it does, but I leave it this way so I can maintain a decent area of desk space.
You can get DisplayPort > HDMI adapters to put in one of the Thunderbolt ports.
I have one displayport, and I have a displayport to HDMI adapter as well as a displayport to VGA adapter, but I can only use one at a time because of the lack of another minidisplayport. ):
You may want to try an Apple Dual-Link DVI adapter (minidisplayport + USB), it requires a USB port as well but you will gain one at the other end. I know it sucks to lose the HDMI option that way, but, it would result in 3 displays.
Will look it up, thanks!
If all else fails, with Mavericks you'd be able to show another display on a TV via Apple TV.
I like this. Not many gaming setups make me go OOOH WANT!
That is a deer's pelvis. My brother has the exact same thing hanging in his room.
Great effort dude. Love the desk art and the peg board. This is basically what I've been sketching while figuring out how to set up my office when I move into my new house. Good work!
Not to nag you like I'm sure your SO does, but those chairs are going to cause some serious back problems a little while down the road unless you wear a back brace while you use your computer.
Yeah I definitely need to upgrade the stools to something supportive, they're already becoming troublesome..
On another note, nice wallpaper! Mind dropping me a link?
Thanks! I'd be happy to:
Really nice! Did you follow a tutorial for getting that graphic on the desk? If so, link?
I didn't follow a tutorial exactly, but had read about transferring images with Lacquer thinner by using a reversed laser printed image. It involves rolling the backside of the paper with a smooth object once the lacquer thinner has been added, in order to provide enough pressure to push the ink into the wood. Too much Lacquer thinner and it will blur the ink, not enough and it won't pull the ink through - so it's really a hands on learning curve.
I fell in love with your desk and hope to do something similar one day!
How much did it cost to make the desk?
The desktop I lucked out on, found it at IKEA in the as-is section for about $70.00 (an employee had written the model # in sharpie on the bottom of it). The legs were $60.00 total. Adding in the stain, lacquer, and laser print cost altogether this cost about $200.
Is that a Gerton tabletop? I've always wondered what it would look like with a dark stain. I've got one with a clear coat of polycrylic so it looks pretty much like your pre-stained desk in pic 2.
Ah, I see. It could be because while it's sold as "unfinished" they do treat it with an oil. Thanks for the reply!
