I've always wondered this. Why are radio mixing consoles always so primitive looking? Why are they so different from modern live sound mixing consoles which have useful features built in like dynamics, eq, and DSPs?
I'm the rookie so I get all the older gear.
When mixing live music you have a lot more lines going in. I have never been in the radio industry, but I guess you don't really need more than 8 lines. This mixer also looks analog, so he probably has plugins and external processors to enhance the quality of the inputs.
They tend to not need all the fanciness. Much of the EQs are actually done at hardware level and what isn't is done at software level, which is an increasingly huge part of broadcast audio. Live production needs to be made to sound perfect on the fly, we use voices and have recordings that we can safely expect to already sound perfect.
Are you Canadian? Your username and tims cup give it away eh?
I am! Do you have something against Tim Hortons?
No! As a fellow Canadian I share your troubled addiction.
What kind of microphone are you rocking?
I think this inspires me to post my own, finally...
She's a beaut. Love it.
Don't ya just love Simian? It crashes every day for me.
Lol. Haven't had it crash on me yet (knock on wood)
I've been thinking this would be a good job prospect. How is it and how easy is it to get into (working at a radio station)? (Senior in High School)
Depending where you are, see if your high school offers any co-op placements. If so, apply for a spot at a radio station. This is how I originally got in and started doing breaks and developing on air skills. After that, they just hired me on.
