What made you choose multiple macbooks over just a single PC with decent specs? Nothing against macs im just curious.
I need laptops since I travel a fair bit for work, and I wanted to keep things separate between work and personal, but not so separate that it would be hard to switch back and forth. I started off as a mac user back in 89-96, then was all PC 96-04 because, really, you can get a whole lot more computer for the same money. I bought a mac in 05 for grad school and found I was using it (and enjoying using it) much more than any of my windows machines. I just enjoy doing what I do on a mac with OSX better than on a pc (or even my mac) running windows. I do still run windows (xp and 7) on some machines and use a virtual machine on my macs. Oddly it's not just the OS. I've had several osx86 machines and even if faster I'd much prefer working on my macbook pro or air when I'm not in my home office
I have seen this computer setup first hand, and can attest to its glory.
Bad ass. What do you do that requires all that beautiful equipment? Also having a room soundproof like that...how good is the sound if you just wanna sit back and listen to some music?
I work for a software company and spend a lot of time recording training materials that are distributed online. I probably (...certainly) don't need all of this to do my job. :) I accumulated this equipment over a number of years but until now it all didn't have a consolidated home.
I'm renovating my house 3/4 gutted so I can go about doing this right from the beginning for a certain room. Any suggestions, guides on materials etc...the right way to approach my project?
This was my first time building a home office like this, so I'm no expert, but I did make enough mistakes to give some suggestions!
Excellent! What about the sound proofing?
The Auralex foam is more for sound dampening than proofing, but if you will be doing any sort of recording in your room it's really worth the investment -- a very noticeable change in the quality of my recordings. I purchased it on Amazon, and there are plenty of other styles and colors to check out.
Thanks! Definitely gonna check it out.
Thanks! I hate seeing wires :)
Amazing! But i bet its a bitch to clean
Surprisingly enough it hasn't been that bad! I run an air filter in the room at night to keep dust under control as best as possible, and since all the screens hover above the desk I can just wipe everything down on the desk surface in a few motions. The foam will be more frustrating to clean if I ever decide to clean it, but since the foam is held up between the beams just by tension I can take individual panels out to clean if something were to happen
What is the screensaver you are using that is a clock. Totally dig the setup.
Can you have that run on one screen of a multiscreen set-up on PC without it running on all screens?
I use display fusion to handle my multiple screen displays. I am this is a screen saver, I just need to find out how to run it as a live background for Windows.
Sadly it's true. One minute on Head-Fi and you realize just how not special your gear is! But… I feel I'm probably not discerning enough (nor playing enough 24bit/96kHz flac files) to be deserving of much more. Plus, the microphone is the weakest part here. Not that the 990 is a bad mic, but I can definitely create sound in this room better than I can capture it (which is the opposite of what it should be given the purpose of this room!)
The foam and the ambience of the room make up for those. And KRK Rokits are good monitors. Not the best, but very good.
This is too perfect.
What kind of cable sleeving is that for your cables coming out of the rMBP?
That's Techflex 3/4 F6 split sleeving, also from amazon. It comes in a big roll and is useful everywhere
Thanks, I'll check it out.
This is exactly why I come on this coolcomputersetups. You just made me dream a little.
Can I ask why you have two MacBooks? Are they synced in any way?
The Macbook pro is my work computer, and the Air is my personal computer I had before they gave me the Pro. I wanted to use both because I really love both, and keeping things separate is good. The Air is part of my desktop since I'm running Synergy (free) which lets me use the same mouse and keyboard on both computers just by moving the mouse to the Air (it's mapped just below my wacom, so I just take the mouse all the way down and I'm now controlling my Air). I've been really happy with this setup and find I don't use the hard-wired C2G KVM much at all since rarely do I need my personal computer to take control of the other screens.
If you dont mind me asking, how much did this setup all cost?
Replacement cost or my cost? I accumulated everything in stages so it wasn't a single cost for me, and much of the hardware was paid for by my work, or purchased through work at much less than retail. Also, items like the KRK monitors and woofer I got on eBay for far less than I should have paid. So the replacement cost is much more than my cost.
This is my dream minus a few monitors. I've been looking into sound dampening my walls in my office but I think I need a bigger office first.
A little different, but what are those lights. They look really nice.
Just saying, the Screensaver on the Macbook Air to the Left is called Fiqlo!
Which monitors? I like the small vertical monitor, I want one but I can't justify a full priced monitor just for internet browsing right now.
