What exactly do the panels do? Can they really be that effective when they're so spread out?
The ceiling plate really doesn't look like first reflection to me. Looks like it is too close to the wall, and that it doesnt extend far enough out to see the speakers from your listening position. Difficult to tell just from pictures tho.
It's the one point on the ceiling that will reflect back to the captain's seat. Anywhere else on the ceiling will ricochet off at an angle such that the sound will hit other surfaces rather than his ears.
How much of an effect do you notice then?
To be honest, I'm not sure. If I were to play music loud enough I might be able to tell more easily. Audio is mostly a hobby of mine and room treatment is supposed to be one of the best ways to make a system sound better. Whether or not it was worth it I'm not certain, but it looks cool anyways!
A fair reason nonetheless!
The panels are incredibly helpful for all kinds of listening rooms. You can make them really easily, simply get Rockwool panels and fabric of your choice.
I was lazy and bought them premade, but they are definitely very simple to make
When you say modded AT M50's, what exactly did you do to them?
I want to mod mine too.
Go for it! all you need is a soldering iron, some wire, and a screwdriver. If you do a bit of googling you can find guides for how to do it with these headphones.
What mods did you do and what effect did it have on the sound? Is it worth the effort?
Looks awesome, good work :)
They are "Sieveking sound omega headphone stand" it appears.
Close, they are actually a replica I bought off of Massdrop. ~50 bucks shipped so around 1/4 the price!
Close! I am willing to spend money on electronics but $200 for a headphone stand was too much for me. The actual one was around $50
You forgot to answer the first question (an answer I would like to see as well). D:
I'd like an answer as well!!!!
Check eBay for omega headphone stands or just headphone stands and you'll find similar products for around $50 shipping from China. I bought two, and I've been quite happy with them.
I've posted elsewhere but EMoneySC2 probably bought the same ones I did, check ebay
How do you like the Audioengine A5+s? I was thinking about picking up either the A5+ or the A2 set. Would you say the bump up to the A5+ set was worth it?
I love them! I was looking for active speakers so I didn't consider the A2 set but I upgraded from M-Audio AV 40s and I could tell the difference right away. Definitely one of the best buys in that price range for monitor speakers
Just to clarify, the A2s are also active (aka powered), they just have 2.75" woofers instead of 5" woofers. Cheers!
Whoops, I am thinking of the P4s, my bad. The A2s are comparable to the AV-40s though so I think my original comment still stands. Thanks though!
Where'd you get the stands for your speakers? I have a pair of M-Audio BX5a's that could use a pair of stands like that, but I've never found them.
I have a pair of A5s and a pair of A2s (the A5+ supposedly sound nearly identical to the A5s). I'd say if you'd be using the A5+s solely as computer speakers for near-field listening, then you'd be better off with a pair of A2s and spending the rest of the money on headphones or a DAC or what have you.
This was incredibly helpful. I planned on using them for only computer speakers so it sounds like I will probably go with the A2s or wait for the A2+s.
I also got them much cheaper on a massdrop buy (I think $50 less with tax and shipping included). I already had the headphones and the DAC, but there is something about big loud speakers that I just love! But I agree, I think if you already have the A2s it might not be worth it.
Question since I was thinking of doing the same (moving my A5+'s to my home theater and replacing with a2+'s). Can you tell me how you hooked them up? since they are powered I couldn't hook them up directly to my receiver without an adapter.
I also upgraded to A5+ from AV40's (first Gen) and the difference was very big, I cant wait until I hook up a DAC, but regardless they are probably the best speakers I've heard under $500.
Very nice. What lighting do you use?
The backlighting is an IKEA Dioder set. The case lighting is called NZXT Hue. The LED lights are made by LEDwholesaler and I got them on amazon.
I'm a big fan of the acoustic panels, been wanting to get some of those and the egg crate foam styled panels for years. Very cozy indeed.
Check the sketchup models I added to the original album! Coziness was all pre-planned :)
What do acoustic panels do?
The rack you have for cable management under the desk, where did you get that? I've idly looked at wally world, home depot, lowes etc and can't find anything that is a similar design.
Out of curiosity, how do you have your monitors hooked up to your system? Direct to the speakers, or any kind of amplifier, etc etc?
It's a bit complex, but here's the wiring:
Thanks! I'm looking to get some more posters of other artists I like - I've been really into Radiohead and Atoms for Peace recently
Can you link the wallpaper please?
This is the reason why I love lurking this coolcomputersetups! I get great ideas for my set up. This is a sweet set up you have. Looks like my brothers with the sound system.
Thanks so much! I got inspiration from a lot of other posts on this coolcomputersetups too
Was looking for the name/price of that wooden curve shaped headphone stand. For the lazy, they are "Sieveking sound omega headphone stand".
Wow, this is pretty nice. Dual monitors, nice speakers, headphones, task lamp, etc, etc. I'd probably do something like this.
So do you like music?
What do you think of that Griffin Powermate? I've seen it before, and thought it might make a great companion to my Spacenavigator
It's good! They are both useful for different things. Right now I use it as a giant play-pause button and it works perfectly. I used to use it as volume control too, but it has many uses and it's pretty useful for only $30
I was wondering this myself. I've been thinking of getting one of those for some time now. But have seen mixed review. I think I might try one out. By the way, awesome setup. This is the kind of stuff I strive for in mine.
Extremely nice setup and I'm inspired by your design choices.
Thank you! I worked hard on making it look pretty. Check out the modeling I did beforehand, I just added it to the album
Could you share the source of that background please?
Looks like an step up from mine, very simaler.
What does yours look like?
What is the primary use of that weird mouse you have there?
It's a 3d mouse! It's useful for any sort of modeling software where you have to rotate or move around in 3d space. I use it primarily for designing parts in solidworks or other programs where I am building things.
Kinda curious, but does anyone who builds gaming setups worry about buying a good UPS or a surge protector in case of an electrical outage?
Everything is on surge strips, and I'm not too worried about ups because anything important I am doing I usually save often so loss of power isn't that big of a deal
I know a lot of friends that use old UPS from their job to keep constant power on their home server setup. However, I think that most of the time on this coolcomputersetups people like showing off the shiny stuff.
Sick setup. How do you survive with only that much SSD space?
It's been rough ;) A lot of my big programs and games are on the HDD. If I were to do it again I would splurge for a 256.
Huh, that DAC looks exactly like their amp! Great little units (have one myself).
The tweeters are exactly at ear level, and I got the monitors as close to equalateral as I could, but thanks for the tip!
Having the speakers on equilateral triangle points is more important than having them on the same level as your ears, from what I remember when I was researching this stuff years ago. But if it works for you like you have it, then great.
Yeah I think I agree, but it's just too difficult to get the spacing right. I am going from a Creative X-Fi Titanium HD soundcard, so not just onboard. The EAX effects make for some great 3d position when I'm gaming! And that should have been amp, it was a typo.
Totally fair - life is compromises. I put a shelf above my monitors (2x27") and put the speakers on their side, tilted down slightly. The tweeters are about 6" above my ear, with great sweet spot. I find that with the monitors taking up about 100deg of my vision I have to put them above or it just sounds too wide having them splayed out at 105-110deg tweeter to tweeter.
How many ears do you have?
Could you give me an estimate on how much everything was total? I love the setup.
Oh man... I don't even want to think about it! At least in the range of 4.5-5k. All acquired over 3 or 4 years though
What program did you use to make the scethes? Awesome station btw! :)
Hey man love it, what wrist rest do you have for your keyboard?
It came with the keyboard, I'm not sure if you are able to buy it separately
Ah okay thanks anyway :)
How do you like the F12 sub?
It's great! I switched over from a Polk PSW10 and my first reaction when using it was "Wow I didn't know bass went lower!!" For the price I think it's the best on the market.
I appreciate your love of Matthew Bellamy and friends. And damn, thats a fine Gaming setup.
Have an bookmark.
You are one organized mother fucker.
Edit: I added pictures of the Sketchup design I did beforehand. Everything in the room was modeled in advance to make sure it would fit and to see what it would look like :)
What I find more impressive is the fact you went into so much detail in sketchp for how you wanted the room to look!
It took a fair bit of time, in the range of 15 hours maybe but that includes shuffling things around and making a couple things custom. Most of the things you see I stole from the warehouse, and it helped that a lot of my furniture is ikea so I was able to find it easily. If you know the dimensions of your new place I would definitely recommend trying it as I was able to pack a lot more in than I thought I would from just doing it in my head.
Thanks for that :) I must "try" and give it a go.
How do you play games that require a disk? I noticed your machine points at the wall.
Very nice indeed, I like the little touches like the clips to keep the cables up and obviously the design and effort you have gone into it.
3 sets of headphones and a par of speakers. Someone likes sound!
Nice, the desk setup looks almost exactly like mine
