The Monitor - Computer Setup

Comments

Oh god. Do NOT take that beautiful machine into an airport.
Lmao man I can't even walk into the Subway with this thing! xD
Oh god did you try?
No way I live in New York, worst place to even consider it lol
Sorry for perhaps a dumb question, but is it because it might be stolen or potential damage? I live in Norway and we dont have subways.
Not a dumb question at all, New York is just very aggressive in any kind of anti-terrorism campaigning that we do around the city. At first glance this PC may look like a "suspicious" package and be treated with unnecessary alarm, that's all : )
Def looks like the stereotypical nuke command console seen in every action movie. At least you didn't put it in an aluminum briefcase, and attach handcuffs from the handle to your wrist.
Sorry to steal a top comment but I don't know shit about computers, now that being said, due to the new x box being more focused on media and less on gaming I have started gaining a small interest in building a computer setup. I would like to have a custom one built (I worked with a guy that will build it for me). I just need to know what to buy, what games are good for pc, and basically everything. Literally no amount of advice and info is stupid. Also is it a good idea for someone that doesn't know a damn thing about computers to have a computer just for gaming?
Thanks!!! And again sorry.
More like getting shot at* a million times by NYPD because they think you're a terrorist.
Wear a labcoat and goggles around your neck. Nobody will ask twice. It's New York.
I'm an idiot. I was confused as why you couldn't take this in to a subway restaurant. Thought maybe Jared only liked Xbox or something
That's better than me. Before I learned about the Subway Restaurant, my friend told me that had acquired a job at Subway. I thought to myself "but there aren't any subways around town!"
I live in NY and I would love to see this thing in action! That is one sweet portable machine.
Manage to get on an airplane with that, then go to this website
Spending this much $$ on a card, obviously I've considered both the 690 and the Titan. For reasons explained below (and apparently overlooked), I specifically chose the Titan.
That graphics card has more RAM than my desktop... I need to upgrade.
It's all cool and all, but I was wondering why did you use a leather case?
It's totally faux leather, more just a skin covering the briefcase, nothing that would hurt my temps : )
Oh. I'd thought it would be better if you strip off the faux leather and cover it with 3M Di-Noc fake carbon fibre vinyls since it's not genuine.
Hey any alternative ideas are appreciated, this certainly won't be my last build : )
Titan on a single-screen computer...
But now he has potential for multi-monitor expansion for whenever he feels like lugging two old briefcases around. :-)
Who games on 2 monitors?
Good point...which is why I can play on any of the tv's in my house with my mobo's WiDi ; )
After messing around with it and testing it with my main rig, I have to say you're going to enjoy it ; )
Plot twist: he gets a subscription to a jam of the month club.
Does WiDi use the titan to render the frames?
Nope, Integrated. It also lags up to 2 seconds between action and display.
So it's just about only good for watching movies if you never pause or rewind.
IMO It's not even good for that, because the audio will get off-sync. I see it more for use doing presentations or browsing the internet, anything that won't be affected by delays like that.
I have widi on my laptop and it's laggy as shit and relatively low quality at 1080p (kinda fuzzy)
Titan is a much better choice here, power consumption and heat are much lower than the 690, and heat is exhausted out of the case rather than into it as on the 690.
Finally, someone who sees ALL aspects, not just numbers on paper
But but 5% higher FPS, who cares if the case is on fire?
Haha, that felt like a passive aggressive retort.
Given the tight space, the exclusively-rear-exhaust Titan would be a more logical choice than the front-and-rear exhasut 690. This way all the heat from the GPU's gets pushed out the back, rather than into the chassis. The added peace of mind IMO is worth the drop in performance.
Looks like a home-made bomb. Sexy.
And liable to get you into a shit-load of trouble if someone calls the police.
Probably a gun pressed to your temple but you can get away when they're disoriented by the beautiful frame rates.
Good god. No thanks. :/
What exactly would they be in trouble for?
Take this into any public place and watch that sexless soccer mom call the FBI on you. Really it does look suspicions but any geek would know better, unfortunately the world doesn't have enough geeks.
Yeah, and the cops could be suspicious all they want and you could just ignore them and go on your way.
Well, okay, not actual trouble. I'd just rather not get tackled, cuffed, and then questioned. o__o
How did you mount that video card?
Laptops unite! no? anybody? damn
Hahaha... You know what, I went on Alienware's site to try and compete with these specs in a laptop build. Came out to around $4.5k just to get it nearly as powerful. Crazy!
Reconsiders future purchase for college...
But yours is also a lot bigger. I love the build though but its not a fair comparison(but alienware is really overpriced anyway).
I need to learn the rules and regs still, I'm semi-new here : )
Nothing above 76 degrees full load CPU, nothing above 78 degrees full load on the Titan
How do you keep it so cool?
That's gotta be a really heavy briefcase
You'd definitely be surprised! I'll do a final weigh-in soon, but the monitor weighs next to nothing, which in previous builds was the heaviest thing I was dealing with. You could balance this monitor on your pinky
Please take my money. All of it
What screen did you use?
A Titan for 1366x768? Wat?
You mean a Titan stuffed into a shoebox sized case, playing on a 1366x768 and 55" TV simultaneously, while staying cool and quiet ; )
Presumably a 1080p tv? Titan is still overkill for that right? I'm new to PC gaming but I thought resolution was all that mattered not screen size.
Yes, even for just one additional screen w/ 1080p the Titan is still overkill. The reason I picked the Titan for this build is for it's small form factor build perks, like low temps and quiet fans
Well you can put super sampling and additional AA on everything so you won't have jaggies on a lower resolution screen. Might as well with a Titan :)
Oh yes, maximum everything =D
And not be able to see anything because the screen is so blurred haha. I'm only kidding hides
Lol I was worried about that but it's incredibly sharp. Throw on something like MoH: Warfighter's 3x Supersampling and you have three times the resolution squeezed onto the screen...it's gorgeous =D
I'd have looked into buying a high-quality notebook replacement panel. Why didn't you do that?
I looked into and considered it, however, this monitor is slim with great color and quality, better price too.
Massive pain to interface, they don't just have a DVI port on them
<exactly this. I think just the VGA adapter (I would have needed) alone was more expensive then the monitor I went with
Not to mention that they usually need a frame to support them, resulting in potentially more weight than a full monitor has, and it'd certainly be more flimsy.
What's the point of that? Laptop screens aren't as good usually with quality (contrast noticeably).
Even at full load and fans maxed, the Titan is a relatively quiet beast. One of many reasons I chose it over the 690
Cool, what about the rest: CPU fan, power supply fan, etc. It seems like in an open case like that you'd hear every little thing.
It's really a quiet running rig, the only time you notice the fans (in the whole case) is when I'm playing something like Crysis 3 maxed out lol
That's great. Is it SSD only, or is there a spinning hard drive? (That would be the one remaining source of noise I can think of)
Three sexy Samsung series SSD's only =D
I can't believe we haven't thought of this earlier... 0_o That's perfect
Done and done : ) Yeah some of these pics were before I finished the final trim, they're actually sprayed with a textured black.
Do you get 60+ consistent FPS in Metro:LL maxed out with SSAA on 4x? Even during heavy battles?
So far during gameplay (even with increased FOV now), I haven't run into anything that even threatens 60 FPS : )
I have a similar build as you, 3770k and Titan w/ latest Beta drivers etc. and in-game it's obviously 40-50FPS with sweetfx + ssaa 3x but on the benchmark tool it's a little different.
Yeah I was looking over his specs and it hit me, I already made an edit before I saw your post, thanks though. I was going crazy trying to figure it out and never even looked over his monitor size, heh. Atleast now OP knows what kind of FPS to expect once he upgrades his monitor..
I've said it before and I'll say it again Jimmy...I need your job to buy these fantastic toys that you have.
Too much stress! : ) You can play with this thing next year at PAX East hahaha
...I swear to god Jimmy, if you don't bring that next year, I will hunt you down.
I feel like this is something out of a James Bond movie. Kudos on the build and getting it all working in those cramp quarters! I love to see off the wall builds like this.
Break me off a piece of that kit-kat four, bro.
Is that an uncovered PSU? Put some sort of casing around it, whether metal or plastic (don't forget a fan) in order to prevent the rest of your components being killed in case of a fire or blown fuse.
Have you tried looking for a battery pack that could power this beast? It'd be neat to just take one of these on a car trip (obviously can't do it on a plane)
I started looking into it, but honestly didn't know where to get something like that. For now, I've got everything wired into the PSU, so you only need one power cable to get this baby up and running : )
The only problem that I could think of would be the weight. If you're trying to power something like that you're going to need a car battery xD
Am I the only one who thinks this thing look atrocious. What a complete fucking mess. You've got to be fucking insane to do something like to a piece of beautiful hardware. What the fuck happened to everybody's standards. I'm done with Internet for the day. Fucking kill me.
That had to cost and arm and a leg, though. Sweet build.
Wow, tbh, I thought that would be more expensive than listed. Still, good to know.
Depending on your budget, occupation and location, I honestly think you can start selling these. 1.2 x the build price for a profit, whilst still being a great deal for anyone buying it.
120% of the build price would be $3,309. I doubt there are really that many people in the market for this.
Oilfield service specialists ( halliburton, slumberger, weatherford).
Actually keeping this in mind now lol
Too bad, would have been an awesome concept. For example, I can't carry my pc everywhere and a decent gaming laptop would cost too much.
Why you so cray Jimmy?
You need one of these broseph... BFBC2 probably gets over 120FPS on here xD
I saw a video of how to make a basic gaming pc for $350 :o I don't know if I should start with that or go for something more expensive
Depending on your budget, i would suggest spending in the $600-$800 range. you will be able to max out most current games, and have a really great PC. I spent about that much on a comp 3 years ago and can still run most current games at maxed settings.
OH WOW consider that bookmarked, how awesome would that be...
Please try it! It's also super cheap! Whole thing like $70, $50 monitor and $20 for connectors.
Definitely doing this in a build...that is just crazy cool
God damn that thing is gorgeous.
Yo man, now just make a kick-ass briefcase to carry it in.
How are temps with that Stock cooler on the i7?
Running Prime95 for a good half hour full load and it peaks at 76 degrees! Might still swap out for a bigger, low profile cooler, not sure yet
Wow, that's extremely impressive, super jealous dude, that rig/mod is sick!
It's funny I thought so too but nobody can see it over there apparently : /
They have samewaht aggresive spam filter, message their mods and they will let it through, it happened to me a few times there.
Nice work! Im curious as to what your specs are?
Dam that is really awesome, any chance of a tutorial coming up?
Hopefully a video breakdown in the near future : )
What keyboard is that? looks an awful lot like a black widow.
Yep, it's the Black Widow Tournament Edition =D
Damn, i have a first gen BlackWidow and what that one instead :(
Good job on this, it looks friggin beautiful.
I want to make a video to upload covering the build and some possible alternatives for components : ) I'll definitely post that up on here
Well yeah but most people can't afford a Titan or don't know what it is so they buy consols
With a few crucial component swaps, like the Titan for a 670, the i7 for an i5, and a single SSD...then you're in the competitive price point range of a new "next gen" (LOL) console : )
I'm sorry but you have to remember that not all console players are like "OOOH LOOK AT THE GRAPHICS" a lot of them, including me who does both console & PC gaming do it for the pick up and play factor.
Not taken as an attack at all, I agree that their is definitely a convenience factor when playing on a console and it's still a ton of fun. If given the choice between building this or the next Xbox, then I'd go with this, that's all : )
So have you run into overheating/cooling issues yet?
Well I tweaked the cable management a few times and now I'm getting really good temps on everything. I may possibly add a low profile cpu cooler in the future but for now everything is staying below 80 degrees, even when pushed to the limit
Great, but what's the point? How is this any more portable than a mini-ITX build in a proper case? Plus I'm sure airflow is sub-par.
I'm not familiar with many mini-ITX builds with built in monitors, speakers, keyboards etc. : /
But why is this aimed at "next gen consoles"? They don't have built in keyboards, monitors, or speakers either...
Yeah sometimes I lean real close to get a tan
TSA chomos are going to rape you in the butt if you bring this to an airport
...even if I put the "there's an intel inside" sticker on it somewhere? lmao : P
That is so AWESOME
Looks like its worth every dollar. Nice build OP! Have fun with that beast
Thank you sir! turns on Metro: LL =D
Amazing, this would be perfect for deployments.
That's super neat. Hell, if it came in a sleek, well-designed box, like an incredibly powerful Macbook/Asus, I'd totally consider getting one.
My only complaint about this build is the fact that my lights dim every time he turns it on...
Kinda makes me wonder just really how much R&D is even required for these 'next-gen' consoles.
Why not go with a GTX 690? more powerful if you're only using a single card, sorry if this has already been answered, couldnt find it.
A GTX 690 is basically two 680's in a single card, I didn't like the temp levels it put out, the noise levels, and how the exhaust was from multiple sides of the card. With the Titan I got much cooler, much quieter and much more controlled performance, which is critical for building inside such a small work space. Everyone knows the 690's more powerful, just didn't want to set my PC on fire everytime I played Crysis 3 LOL ; )
So while everyone else is asking what the actual computer specs are, I am actually more interested in that briefcase you used. What are the dimensions of it? Did you just have it sitting collecting dust, or did you buy it somewhere? I have always wanted to build my own laptop, as I want desktop power in a portable format, and I think a build similar to this would be perfect. Put a couple backpack straps on there, get a 21" 1080p screen, and it would be absolutely perfect for my use.
The case I used here was 16" wide by 11.25" tall, with a depth of 5". Homegoods is a store by me that sells random trinkets for home decorating, and they always have this same sized case just in a different style every few weeks. Laptops are super expensive, especially if you want to play high-end games on them, this was an obvious alternative : )
First off awesome idea, execution and look to it, but the realist in me has to ask how bad is the airflow in there since there is so much (power) jammed into such a small space?
I used a similar build's layout (Lando Briefcase build) which has great airflow in a slightly larger case, and the temps thus far have been even better than expected...even at full load =D
Great to hear! Nothing worse than old school laptop lap burns :( Hows the weight on it?
It's honestly not bad, especially for it's size. I was just telling someone I definitely have to do a final weigh-in on this thing because it's deceivingly lightweight : ) The monitor is what saves it, it's as light as a frisbee lol
Also, thank you : )
Tried, apparently no one noticed it lol
Try posting it one more time, but format it diffrently. Write a propper pcpp sheet for your parts, and delete the long paragraph under the cyrrent images
Yeah don't know how to do that, I don't use coolcomputersetups often : /
