Active Monitor - Computer Setup

Comments

Not the OP obviously, but I have had a set for around a year now. Personally, I love the speakers. They have a very flat eq curve so they have fairly equalized highs, mids and lows. From a personal standpoint, I love them.
I would say yes, absolutely. If you like really clear and crisp sound then these are a perfect option. They got a really nice tightness to the bass too. I don't think they make the HS8M anymore but the HS8 are pretty much the same, just some aesthetic differences.
I wonder though if he has them setup too close to the wall as the air vent is in the back. Have you noticed this being an issue?
The speakers are angled in a way so that the vents are given as much room as they need, i know you cant see it that well in the picture but they have about 5 inches from the wall. Haven't had any problems with it, i dont usually crank the volume that high.
Fair enough, it just looked like they were pretty much up against the wall. I actually just bought some new HS7s earlier this week. Can't wait to try them out.
I like mine a lot, hope your happy with your's.
I would love to hear your thoughts on those since I am possibly buying the same speakers in the future.
I'll let you know on Monday.
Absoutly, they are a great studio monitor. I've had my pair of the HS80M's since 2009.
Because they're active monitor speakers - no need for an additional amp. $250 is definitely entry-level in that realm.
Exactly, plus the build quality is really really nice. They definitely got the feel of some more expensive speaker i tried.
Can you elaborate on what active monitor speakers mean? And possibly WHY DO good speakers cost real money?
Good speakers cost more because its really hard to make speakers have a ''true''sound, most speakers (low-end home theater, computer speakers)is designed to make bad stuff sound good while more expensive monitors tries to make the sound as life-like as possible if that makes any sense. With the monitors i have good recorded audio sounds fantastic and bad sounding stuff really sounds bad. I listen to a lot of electronic music and something that almost all other speakers i have owned had this muddy giant bass that pounded the other sounds in to the abyss while the HS8M makes the bass have more clarity and punch without drowning out the other instruments. Hope that helped you a bit.
Sometimes, lately its been a lot of tech house and deep house. The thing with studio monitors is that they are good with any type of music. I'm also big into metal and classical music and they worked great fine with pretty much every thing i've listened to so far.
Active.... They have a power plug. Passive, no power plug. Amp powers them.
I'm by no means an expert, but with normal speakers you'd need to buy a separate amplifier to power them (usually in computer setups this is built into the subwoofer). These speakers have that built in. Monitor speakers are most commonly used in music production for their "flat" clear tone. They usually have a better build quality over your average logitech speakers for example.
I'm new: does this mean it just needs external power and a mic jack or?
I don't understand your question.
Both speakers need power from the wall. You also need an (prefered) external soundcard, you can get very cheap ones, but in audio stuff you get what you pay for so a higher tier/priced soundcard will sound better. 200-250$ is a good pricepoint to start out at. My soundcard is a M-audio fast track c400 and it was about 220$ and it sound great, it has all the inputs/outputs i need and many useful features.
Because good monitors of that size usually cost 4 figures. But the Yamahas sound just as good as them.
Firstly, that's $250 per speaker, you'll need 2.
Where do you see $250?
There was one for new yesterday but it got sold.
Fuck yeah for the Yamahas! I bought a pair for my studio when the price finally went down after YEARS of drooling over them. One of the best investments I've ever made.
Will listen to it !
Thanks and feel free to comment. I could use some constructive criticism.
Really liked the song ! To make a bit smother you should try putting a compressor and a hi frequency cutoff on that ride. The bass drum could use a bit of more of the mixing time to get the muddiness out and in with a bit more punch. I use EZmix on all my kicks, its a great plug-in with some nice presets, the interface is about as easy as it get too.
Glad you liked it, and good advice. It is definitely going to get a few more hours in the mixing department. There's a lot of stuff on there from the past few years that I've been working with FL Studio if you're interested in hearing more. Some of it is goof off stuff, and some is completely unrelated to anything else, but most if not all is worth a listen IMHO.
I like it.. very easy to listen to over and over.
The song is nice but that kick sounds really off and that symbol hit is a touch too loud.
Thanks! I agree on the cymbals. Not sure about the kick. Also the electric guitar melody starts to fuck up at the end due to memory issues.
Can I see a picture of the entire loft with it too? This looks really cool.
Maybe i'll update the gallery tomorrow :)
Nice setup! what do you use these poker keys for? are they actually doing something when playing poker?
The name of the keyboard is the poker 2, it's just an allusion to that.
Super nice setup...looks comfy dude
It is, thank you !
I cant stand my m400 it constantly disconnects whenever it feels like it with my windows 8 pc and i have to un plug then plug it back in every time my pc went into sleep mode, so i tried going back to windows 7, but it did nothing, so i just disconnected it, and am waiting for someone to tell me it will actually work like it's supposed to.
M400 ? If you mean the soundcard i had that problem too, turns out i connected it to a USB3 port and that the soundcard can't handle the connection. Try switching out the cable if the first thing dosen't solve the problem.
I meant c400, and i did try that, but it was only when my computer would go into sleep mode that it would disconnect so i don't think it has anything to do with the cable, and to be honest my computer is having some issues with sleep mode as well, it will just turn into a brick and i have to turn it off and on from the back
I believe the problem is that the soundcard has no external power brick and is powered via the USB port and when you put your computer to sleep the ports shut off the power and the card dies and it will disconnect and not detect on startup. I think you can change sleep mode settings in the advanced power management in windows to make the computer have the USB ports on even in sleep mode.
Ah, clever i'll look into that when i go home, thanks.
Damn I could use a keyboard like that.
You can buy them on ebay or techkeys.us were i got mine but i think they are out of stock atm. they are quite expensive but worth it.
Do you have anymore pictures of your room?
Nope, but i might post some more soon.
That would be great - I am really intrigued with your space!
Know any good coolcomputersetupss that would like the kind of room i have ? maybe i can post them there if you know any :)
I was just curious, I know that roomporn likes nicely done small spaces a great deal though :)
Okey, i will post there tomorrow.
Cool I would love to see it
This is such a clean, minimal and all round great setup. Congrats. :)
Thank you, i worked har for it ! :)
Real speakers, I like. Every time I see a nice setup with some cheap shit logitech speakers, I die a little inside. Thanks for not making me die a little inside.
Instead of books or whatever is under your monitor speakers, you might wanna buy Mopads, or just a block of sturdy foam. Like the setup though.
I got some when i bought the speakers but they are tucked away in storage. The studio tech guy i got them from was in the middle of moving. Haven't experienced vibration noise yet which is good.
Lol noticed the DVD called SHAFT :P Nice setup
Those speakers give the perception that everything else in that room is tiny.
They are some huge ass speakers, when i bought them i thought they were almost to big, but i got used to it.
They look similar to my A5's so my brain wants to imagine the room is proportionate to those.
These are 8's so they are a bit bigger. I live in Sweden so in the winter is kinda nice having a cosy warm room with only a computer as a heating element. For the summer i have a huge ceiling fan to keep it cool. It keep's a steady 21°C (70°F) all year around depending on if the fans on or off. If i don't use the ceiling fan in the summer my computer would burn to a crisp and i would melt.
I would drag my head across that ceiling.
That's not the ceiling, it the bottom of my loft bed. The bed bottom is about 6,5 feet of the ground and the ceiling of the room is 9,5 feet tall. I'm a tall dude and i only smashed my head once or twice :)
I like the benq man. Are they really as good as everyone says they are?
That depends on what you qualify as good, it good for the price since it's pretty cheap if you want a 24 inch display. Colors accuracy and viewing are kinda average since it's a TN panel. Not bad but not awesome.
I've heard they're the best monitor for gaming. But they're not that good for overall use apparently.
In my opinion the best displays for gaming are probably benQ's 144hz monitor. I personally like hi-res ips monitors, don't care for high refresh rate, i prefer good color accuracy.
It's a 1 dollar board from the parts section in ikea with some books under it. I didn't like having my soundcard and midi-controller at the same height as my keyboard, makes playing the midi-controller kinda hard so i made a little ledge. It gives the illusion of having a bigger desk.
Love the jigsaw doll..and clean set up! thanks for sharing
Thanks ! I picked him up at a sci-fi convention here in Sweden just after the first movie came out, the rest of them are garbage haha.
Really awesome setup. Love that it's functional, non-sterile, minimalism. Really great work.
Thanks, i tried hard to make it as minimalist as possible without loosing any functionality. Also tried to make it ''homey'' with as little stuff as possible since i spend a lot of time here, my ide was to merge office with bedroom, clean but cozy.
What type of desk is that?
I have no ide, i got it from my grandfather's friend. He was gonna throw it away since he moved back from America to Sweden. All i know is that it was really expensive so my grandfather thought it was a waste to throw out so his friend gave it to me.
I love the style of that desk.
I'm worried about that lamp, it looks like it's about to fall.
Double-sided tape is the trick.
Ah thank-you very much! :D
Up vote for having the same midi controller! I'd also like to say you have very nice monitors and I love how clean your set up is.
Thank you very much ! I like the controller but i feel that it kinda limiting me so i might swap it out for something bigger in the future.
Really diggin the setup! What made you buy G-Force on DVD?
Thanks ! I gave it to a friend as a joke/impulse gift when we were hungover in a video store buying candy. I think it was like 1$ dollar or something so i couldn't resist, somehow it ended up coming home with me and now it just sits in my shelf. I don't think i actually opened it once haha.
I have that midi controller as well. I absolutely love it. But the usb connector speed working one day after about a year or so. I still have it, just in case I ever find a way to fix it.
I got 2year warranty on mine. you should check if you can get a new one from akai if you already haven't done that :)
I don't think I have the box or any paperwork. And I was dumb as hell when I bought it (guitar center) they offered the replacement plan, and I declined.
I've done that as well, it suck. Hope you can get a new one, they kinda cheap compered to some of the controllers with the same features.
I was thinking about getting a new one, but realized I wanted something worth more keys, but wanted pads, to. So I got an Alesis Q49, and an Akai MPD18 for about $50 more than the mpk mini.
I have to check it out, i'm looking to get i new one as well.
Maybe i should post it there as well. :)
Amazing setup and mad props for the massive Bioshock kit. One of my two favorite game series.
Thanks ! I love the bioshock series, just played through Infinite and it was amazing. Really liked the first one to, the second one.. not so much. Got the special edition really really cheap so i bought it just for the posters.
Same, I didn't buy the collectors edition when it first came out but it was like $30 new a couple of years later so couldn't resist. Best collectors edition ever IMO.
Hey OP, I really like your gaming setup. Nice and clean. Where did you get the shelving?
Thanks ! Everything is from ikea except the desk.
How do you find the Logitech mouse? I'm using one myself and I find it pretty awesome. Feels better than my last razer mouse.
I love this one. It's cool without having a quazillion screens
